Rep. John Smithee receives Champion of Transparency award from Texas Press Association

AUSTIN — Rep. John Smithee, R-Amarillo, has been named a “Champion of Transparency” by the Texas Press Association for his many years of legislative work on open government issues.

“Rep. Smithee has long been a go-to lawmaker on legislation protecting the public’s right to attend government meetings and access government records,” said Mike Hodges, executive director of the press association.

“Transparency is fundamental to government accountability,” Smithee said. “I’m honored to receive this recognition from the Texas Press Association and appreciate their mission to ensure that citizens have full and timely access to public information.”

The Texas Press Association, which represents some 400 newspapers across Texas, lobbies for freedom of speech, open records, open meetings and public notice. The association presents Champion of Transparency awards to state officials who distinguish themselves as advocates for open government.
