Tim Bell was honored with a retirement reception Friday, July 22, 2016 for his years of service in law enforcement, including his most recent role for 13 years as the Hartley County Chief Deputy. Bell began his law enforcement career in Dalhart in 1979 at the Dalhart Police Department. Three years later, he became a criminal investigator for the 69th District Court.

Senators Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Corey Booker (D-N.J.) introduced the Commodity Checkoff Program Improvement Act of 2016 July 14. In a press release from Lee’s office, checkoff programs are mandatory 
participation programs under the US Department of Agriculture. These programs are funded through compulsory fees on producers of eggs, beef, pork and a multitude of other agricultural products.

A storm that rolled through Dalhart starting at approximately 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening brought gusting winds and flash flood rain that caused damage around town, including this tree that was uprooted on Peach Avenue.

The Dalhart City Council met Tuesday night, July 12. The council, City Manager James Stroud and City Attorney Greg Oelke discussed at length about acting upon a special use permit for requirements for manufactured homes.

This is the commission of the newly reestablished Dalhart Neighborhood Watch program, reinstated by several concerned local residents, in collaboration with the Dalhart Police Department.

Dalhart has seen a wave of recordbreaking heat so far in July, with a total of four days breaking previous records in the last week. Some of the records broken were set more than 50 years ago. The most recent record-breaking temperature was set Sunday with a high of 107 degrees in Dalhart. The previous record was set in 2009 at 103 degrees.

Cargill announced Friday that it plans to sell it’s cattle feed yards in Dalhart and Bovina to Friona Industries.

The terms of the sale were not released, and the transaction will not be complete until final agreements and regulatory reviews are completed, according to information released by the company last week. Cargill will retain the feed yards in Yuma, Colo., and Letoi, Kans. Cargill states the employees currently at the at Dalhart and Bovina feed yards will be offered positions with Friona Industries.

The shooting in Dallas last Thursday night, July 7 that claimed the lives of five Dallas Police Officers and wounded 11 others hits close to home for many, but especially for Carrol Ailshie, mother of one of the officers wounded.
