Dalhart High inducts new NHS members

The Dalhart High School chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) held its annual induction ceremony on Sunday September 27 at the high school auditorium.

The Dalhart High NHS inducted a total of 12 new members. 10 of them are juniors this year and two are seniors. The juniors who were inducted are Baiden Beavers, Isabella Faria, Kinzley Frische, Maya Hernandez, Chance Juilfs, Bree Pollard, Jewel Puga, Alyra Rivera, Fernanda Terrazas and Logan Marc Welch. The two seniors were Keldon Allen and Roxy Alvidrez.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals established the National Honor Society in 1921. It was formed for four main purposes: to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; and to develop character in students in secondary schools. Potential members of NHS are evaluated in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

In order to be eligible for NHS at Dalhart High, students must have at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Those who meet that requirement have the opportunity to fill out information forms about their extracur-ricular activities, community service, leadership positions, and work experience. A council of faculty members then re-views the information and makes the final decision about mem-bership. Only those students who meet the qualities of leader-ship, service, charac-ter, and scholarship are accepted for mem-bership. Cole James, the current NHS presi-dent at Dalhart High, opened the induction ceremony with a short welcome speech and invocation, and then led the pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags. After that, James introduced Dalhart High Assistant Princi-pal Anthony Catherall and Counselor Kely Kitchens, and men-tioned that Dalhart High Principal Staci Maddox and Dalhart ISD Superintendent Jeff Byrd sent con-gratulations to the in-ductees, although they were out of town and so unable to attend. A special candle cer-emony was held next. James, Gracie Verme-dahl, Kaetlin Sund-vahl and Alden Hobbs each lit a candle and read a description of one of the four criteria for membership. After the candle ceremony, James led the new inductees in the NHS Pledge, and congratu-lated them on their induction. Jennifer Bowers, the NHS adviser, followed by introducing the inductees as they were presented their mem-bership certificates and cards by Cath-erall and Kitchens. She then introduced the current members of the Dalhart High Chapter of NHS as each took a flower and presented it to a fam-ily member. Catherall followed that with a few closing remarks, after which a recep-tion was held for the members, along with friends and family. Current members of NHS, who were inducted previously, are Brett Alver, Kash Grimsley, Alden Hobbs, Cole James, Eli Kelso, Kambry Kitchens, Xavier Lusk, Jacob Meyer, Joie Read, Kaleb Speer, Kaetlin Sundvahl, Lil-ian Terrazas, Gracie Vermedahl and Jessca Waterson. James is president, Vermedahl is Vice President, Sundvahl is Secretary, Hobbs is Treasurer, and Isabella Faria is the Junior Represen-tative to the officers.
