Texas Panhandle Motors hosts first summer car show BY BILL KELLY Texas Panhandle Motors (TPM), a car group formed a few months ago by a group of students at Dalhart High School, along with a few from other nearby schools (including at least one senior from Hartley and one senior from Tascosa High in Amarillo) held its first ever car show at the Rita Blanca Coliseum on Saturday June 20. TPM was formed earlier this year, with their official Facebook page being created in February. They hosted a Spring Break Kickback in March, which basically just served as a car show to introduce the group to the community. They raised $3,500 at that event, which was donated to help build the new nursing home for the Dallam-Hartley Counties Hospital District. They have since become involved in the community in other ways, helping out with the Community Clean Up in April and gathering donations to go buy supplies (drinks, snacks, etc.) for the Dalhart Volunteer Fire Department in May when the department was almost constantly battling grass fires. The proceeds from this car show, which includes entry fees and ticket sales for a 50/50 raffle, will be donated to CASA, 69, and there was also a canned food drive for Lincoln Street Baptist Church’s pantry. The group has nine board members. Joseph Herrera is the president, Juan Perez is vice president, and Uriel Perez is Secretary/Treasurer. Other members include Victor Perez, Cristian Garcia, Manuel Marquez, Sebastian Gonzalez, Zane Ford and Tomas Castro. Over 100 vehicles were entered in the car show, including classic cars, cars that are more modern, pickup trucks and semi-trucks. A contest was held in 11 different categories during the show, with winners receiving an award that looked like a license plate that showed which category it represented. Crystal Reyes won the award for Best Exterior, and Wade Lenz won for Best Interior. Pete Wiebe won for Best Lifted vehicle (a vehicle that has been modified or designed to ride higher than normal), and Steve Been won for Best Lowered (a vehicle that has been modified to ride lower than normal, usually just above the road.) Lane Bradley received the award for Best Project vehicle, and Eddie Carter won for best Classic car. Jose Macias won for Best Audio/Sound System, and Joseph Herrera won for Best Exhaust. Jaxtyn Jacob won for Best Semi, and Bryan Gonzalez won for Best Lights (this award was presented after dark, later than the others so that the lights could be seen correctly.) Dean Graham won the award for Best of Show.
