
Dalhart High hosts academic awards assembly

Dalhart High School held its annual Awards Assembly on Monday May 11 in the high school auditorium. Students received awards for individual classes and for achievements throughout their high school careers, and were also presented with certificates for achievements in various academic contests.
Dalhart High principal Staci Maddox welcomed everyone to the ceremony. U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Daniel O’Sullivan and Corporal Cole Thorn then presented the U.S. Marine Corps awards. The Scholastic Excellence Award went to Addison Ramirez and the Distinguished Athlete Award was given to Hunter Trusler. Natalie Garcia presented her awards next. It was noted that these particular awards were selected by the students’ classmates. Jake Byrd received the George Strait award, Diego Guevara received Best Hug, Rose Pedraza got the “Survived the Dentist” award, Jacob Fernandez received the Hoodie awards, Jonathan Berngen received the Rap Dancer award, Logan Guetersloh received the Non- Stop Dancing awards, Alex Sacdin received the Bright Eye award, Joslyn Sweeney received the Lego Master award, Haley Calvert received the Jewelry Designer award, and Luz Reyes received the Best Burrito Making award.
Christy Dovel and Courtney Corrales presented some awards from Frank Phillips College. Several students received awards for completing at least 15 hours at Frank Phillips with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. These students were Avi Day, Alejandro Flores, Kirsten Foust, Lauryn Heiskell, Reese Jenkins, Audra Jobe, Circe Johnson, Kammi Maddox, Maggie Meeks, Addison Ramirez, Havenn Seaton, Hudson Siebert, Robert Speer, Victoria Terrazas, Hunter Trusler and Zane Van Beek.
Nine seniors received an award for maintaining a 4.0 GPA at Frank Phillips. They included Avi Day, Lauren Heiskell, Circe Johnson, Maggie Meeks, Addison Ramirez, Robert Speer, Victoria Terrazas, Hunter Trusler and Zane Van Beek. Roxanna Alvidrez and Aspenn Seaton were juniors who attended Frank Phillips and maintained at least a 3.5 GPA while earning 15 or more hours.
A large number of seniors actually graduated from Frank Phillips with an Associate’s degree. They included Cristian Acevedo, Edgar Alvidrez, Evelyn Amaya, Julian Avalos, Wilson Calel, Denilson Cotuc, Cesar Mendez, Rigoberto Montes, Alan Munoz, Damian Murrieta, Carlos Son, and Gregory Whitaker in welding and Brandis Beavers, Alejandro Flores, Kirsten Foust, Audra Jobe, Kammi Maddox and Havenn Seaton for their Associate’s Degrees.
Several other special awards were presented at different times during the ceremony. Laura Portillo-Amaya presented awards to the student council officers. Gezsela Dominguez was president, Avi Day was vice president, Kirsten Foust was secretary, Victoria Terrazas was parliamentarian, and Maggie Meeks was historian. Terrazas, Foust, Hailey Nolt, Day, Dominguez, Robert Kade Speer and Jake Byrd were also recognized for serving on the student council all four years of high school.
Four-Year Awards were given in several different subjects, with those students receiving plaques. Victoria Terrazas received the Four-Year English Award. The Four- Year Social Studies Award was presented to Addison Ramirez. The Four-Year Science Award went to Arianna Chacon. Hunter Trusler and Kade Speer received the Four-Year Math Award.
The UIL Scholars awards were presented to those students in the top 10% of the senior class. These awards were given to Brandis Beavers, Brian Gonzalez Correa, Havenn Seaton, Reese Jenkins, Circe Johnson, Victoria Terrazas, Robert Kade Speer, Hailey Nolt, Hunter Trusler and Addison Ramirez.
The top five seniors were given extra recognition. Ramirez received a plaque and a blanket as the top senior, as well as a plaque for being Valedictorian, and Trusler received a blanket for being in the top five seniors and also received a plaque for being Salutatorian. Blankets were also presented to Nolt, Speer and Terrazas for being among the top five seniors.
The students with the highest GPA in each of the lower classes were presented with a plaque. Cole James was named Top Junior, Bree Pollard was named Top Sophomore, and Isabella Perez and Audrey Hobbs tied for Top Freshmen.
A large number of students also received awards for individual classes and for UIL academics and USA Skills. Misty Bornemeier presented the English IV awards to Melody Trujillo and Zach Drew, and the Dual-Credit English IV awards to Addison Ramirez, Hunter Trusler and Kade Speer. Jennifer Bowers presented these awards: Spanish I (non-native speaking)- Carmen Waterson and Spanish I (native speaking)-Marcela Barba. Bowers also presented a certificate to Arrianna Garcia for placing sixth at district in UIL Editorial Writing
Jaida Brown presented the Forensic Science award to Keven Sandoval-Cruz and the Biology award to Aiden Buck. Brown also presented the following certificates for these Skills USA teams and individuals: Crime Scene Model (awarded State Superior)-April Gonzalez and Arrianna Garcia; Criminal Justic Quiz Bowl (second at district and state qualifier)-April Gonzalez, Arrianna Garcia, Gizel Barron, Marina Contreras, Natalee Glover and Dalia Flores; Criminal Justic Display Panel (awarded State Superior)- Jayden Nuno; Criminal Justice (second at district and alternate to state)-Jayden Nuno; Crime Scene Model (state qualifier)-Kevin Sandoval-Cruz; Nurse Assisting (third at district)-Natalee Glover; Nurse Assisting (second at district)- Daliah Flores.
In UIL Speech and Debate, April Gonzalez received a certificate for placing sixth at district in Prose Reading, and Jenna Voss received a certificate for placing sixth at district in Persuasive Speaking.
Dakota Carranza gave out these awards: Principals of Education- Isabella Perez; Practicum of Education- Victoria Rios; Instruction Practicum- Gracie Vermedahl; Yearbook-Hayden Baldwin; Algebra IITell Atha; and Human Growth and Development- Bree Pollard.
Carranza also presented certificates for these Skills USA individuals: Digital Illustration (awarded State Superior)-April Gonzalez; Digital Illustration (awarded State Superior)-Arrianna Garcia; Graphic Imaging Sublimation (state qualifier)-Gizel Barron; Digital Illustration (awarded state superior)-Makayla DeMots; Photography (awarded State Excellence)-Marina Contreras; and Graphic Imaging Sublimation (state qualifier)- Marina Contreras.
April Carson gave the Geometry Highest Average award to Mario Orrantia, the Most Improved Geometry Student award to Eva Pablo Perez, and the Honors Geometry awards to Jaed Peoples and Baiden Beavers. Stephanie Ellis presented these awards: Culinary I-Logan Welch, Culinary IIMichelle Garcia, and Introduction to Culinary- Michelle Garcia.
Abbey Garcia presented the Practicum in Health Science- CNA-Clinical Excellence award to Sydni Hyer; the Dual-Credit Med Term/Nutrition- Excellence in Health Science award to Jewel Puga, and the Health Science Theory-Innovative Thinker award to Aspenn Seaton.
Abbey Garcia also presented pins for completing CNA certification to Avi Day, Kammi Maddox, Gezsela Dominguez, Sydni Hyer, Skyla Delgado and Rhylie Phillips.
Nicole Guidry presented the following awards: Accounting I-Ronaldo Quevedo and Jase Sundvahl; Accounting II-Cole James; Money Matters- Havenn Seaton; and Financial Math- Xavier Lusk and Kaetlin Sundvahl.
Gracen Haberthur presented the English I award to Jonathan Mendoza-Contreras and the Honors English I award to Isabella Perez. I.J. Hinojos presented World History award to Jayden Basaldua. Andrew Hokanson presented Principles of Ag awards to Axel Merino and Carmen Waterson; Floral Design to Jaed Peoples; Advanced Floral Design award to Brandis Beavers; Small Animal award to Isabella Faria; Advanced Animal Science award to Hailey Nolt; Equine Science to Baiden Beavers and Ag Floral Practicum to Jake Byrd.
Rebecca Hokanson gave the English II awards to Maddison Webster and Mario Guttierez and the English II Honors awards to Nicholas Lenz and Alyra Rivera. James Hopper presented Chemistry awards to Bree Pollard and Maya Hernandez and Biology awards to Brock Bezner and Kylie Cummings. David Hutchison presented the following awards: Duel-Credit Government- Hailey Nolt and Reese Jenkins; Economics-Kirsten Foust, Audra Jobe, and Carlos Son Gomez; Dual-Credit U.S. Modern History-Brett Alver; Dual-Credit U.S. History to 1876-Cate Wilcox, Kaleb Speer and Gracie Vermedahl. Hutchison also presented certificates to the UIL Social Studies team of Jaxon Hokanson, Jenna Voss and Tell Atha and the Current Events team of Aiden Buck, Jenna Voss and Jaxon Hokanson.
Kiel Kitchens presented the P.E. awards to Teresa Rubio and Miguel Mier. Ruben Lopez presented the Math Models award to Roxanna Alvidrez. Jeff Metcalf presented the Government/ Economics award to Kreed Hines. George Page gave the Earth Systems science to student award to Cole James and the Chemistry Most Improved award to Isabela Morales. Page also gave a certificate to Gizel Barron for placing first at district in UIL Physics. Laura Portillo-Amaya gave the Spanish II award to David Espinoza.
Abbie Read presented the Biology award to Kambry Kitchens. Jennifer Read presented the Law Enforcement awards to Remington Johnson and Brookley Lenz, the Sociology/Psychology award to Brett Alver, and the Introduction to Culinary awards to Nayib Altamirano and Diana Castillo.
Camille Robbins presented these awards: Algebra II to Keldon Allen and Kaetlin Sundvahl and Pre- Calculus Dual-Credit to Hunter Trusler and Addison Ramirez. Rebecca Roland presented the Honors English III awards to Joie Read and Kash Grimsley and the English III awards to Fernanda Galban Martinez and Logan Ball. Jeff Sanderson gave the Welding I-Strong Arm award to Cristian Garcia and the Welding II-Strong Arm awards to Cesar Mendez Gonzalez and Christian Mandujano.
Larry Smith presented four awards: Anatomy & Physiology to Jaedyn Mendoza, Pharmacology to Kade Speer and Problem Based Athletic Training to Lilian Terrazas.
Frank Subealdea presented the Auto Tech awards to Jesus Dominguez and Jorge Gonzales Arias, and the Occupational/Safety awards to Christopher Perez-Soto. He also presented certificates to students for advancing to State in Skills USA: Tell Atha for Aviation Technical; Legend Robertson for Motorcycle Technology, and Ladainian Garcia for Technical Related Math
Chase Thompson presented the U.S. History awards to Brookley Lenz and Jude Turpin. Lida Trusler presented the Algebra I awards to Christopher Perez-Soto and Marcela Barb and the Honors Algebra I awards to Audrey Hobbs and Brock Bezner. Talon Winings gave the World Geography awards to Audrey Hobbs, Naylee Cordova and Jose Lugo.
The ceremony concluded after all the awards had been presented.
