ArchivesEarly voting for primary starts TuesdayEarly voting for primary starts Tuesday BY BILL KELLY After many years of few if any contested local elections in the primaries for either Dallam County or Hartley County, a number of retirements have made created four different contested positions in Hartley County in the Republican Primary. Early voting for the primary starts Tuesday February 17 (Monday is President’s Day), and the election itself will be held Tuesday March 3. The positions of Hartley County Judge, Hartley County Justice of the Peace, Hartley County Treasurer, and Hartley County Commissioner for Precinct 4 are all being contested in this year’s primary. Camilla Green and Shellie McNabb are running for County Judge, Kristy Detwiler and Gary Messer are running for Justice of the Peace, Gary Schniederjan and Justin Waggoner are running for Commissioner for Precinct 4, and Libby Caviness Flanery and Timbra Morris are running for County Treasurer. The Dalhart Texan attempted to contact each of the candidates for these positions (mainly by email or social media) and give them a chance to write a short article making their own case as to why they should be elected to whichever position they are running for. As of now, six of the eight candidates have submitted articles, including both candidates for County Judge and both candidates for County Treasurer, and one candidate for each of the other positions, and those articles are being published in today’s edition since early voting starts Tuesday. We will publish articles from the other two candidates in either the February 19 or February 26 edition of the Texan if we receive something in time. There are also area, regional, and statewide positions being contested. We will list those candidates and positions in the Texan next week, we wanted to concentrate on local positions in this edition.
