NewsCommunity worth savingCommunity worth savingThe plan to strengthen rural health care in DalhartWhen the alarm sounded late at night for a local farmer and his wife, the reality of rural life hit hard. The farmers wife clutched her chest in pain, her breathing tight, her husband panicking beside her. With no large hospital within miles and precious minutes ticking away, they faced an impossible choice: wait for an ambulance, drive hours through the dark, or pray for a miracle. For many families in rural Texas, this terrifying situation is not a far-fetched story; it’s what happens when health care is stretched to the breaking point. Across the nation, rural hospitals are disappearing at an alarming rate. Between 2005 and 2023, 146 rural hospitals closed or converted away from inpatient care, according to the USDA’s Economic Research Service. More recent analysis by Chartis (2025) shows nearly 46 percent of rural hospitals are operating at a financial loss, with 432 hospitals nationwide considered vulnerable to closure. Texas leads the nation in this grim statistic with 24 rural hospitals already closed, according to the APM Research Lab. When a hospital closes, the ripple effects are devastating. In one rural Texas county, expectant mothers were forced to drive more than 40 minutes to deliver because the local hospital could no longer afford to keep its labor and delivery unit open. In another, a farm accident victim was transferred hours away due to the lack of trauma care, minutes that can mean the difference between life and loss. These aren’t isolated incidents. They are a warning. Coon Memorial Hospital serves as the cornerstone of our rural community. Offering 24-hour emergency care staffed by ER-trained physicians, as well as inpatient, surgical, and diagnostic services, the hospital plays a critical role in safeguarding the health and well-being of our region. The Dallam-Hartley Counties Hospital District supports our community—our families at every stage of life, from newborns to our cherished seniors; our schools; our businesses; and every person who chooses to live, work, and serve in this place we proudly call home. If Dalhart or any of the communities we serve were to lose even one of the essential services offered by Coon Memorial Hospital or the hospital district, our entire region would feel the loss. Families would face longer drives, slower emergency response, higher risks, and heartbreaking outcomes that could have been avoided with care right here at home. A hospital district functions through many interconnected components, with Coon Memorial Hospital serving as the central hub. The nursing home is a critical part of this system and is key to ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of our rural hospital. This project represents far more than additional rooms—it represents a commitment to protecting our hospital’s future and caring for those who built the foundation we stand on today. By investing in local long-term care, we build stable revenue, reduce dependence on high-cost acute services, share staff and resources more efficiently, and solidify our hospital’s role as the anchor of our region. Supporting this nursing home expansion is not optional; it is the key to keeping rural health care alive in Dalhart. Here’s how you can help: attend the upcoming Town Hall Meeting with our partners and hospital leaders. Ask questions. Learn the plan. Encourage local employers to partner with the hospital district. Choose local when it comes to your health care; every visit, every appointment, every test keeps our services strong. Talk to young people about careers in nursing, allied health, and rural medicine. Because if we don’t act now, if we let our health care infrastructure fade, we risk more than convenience. We risk our parents’ safety, our children’s futures, and the very heartbeat of our town. Let’s come together for our hospital district. Let’s stand behind the nursing home plan that strengthens and secures the financial future of Coon Memorial Hospital; OUR rural hospital that this community depends on. Yesterday inspired us. Tomorrow depends on us. Let’s ensure Dalhart remains a place where high-quality healthcare is never out of reach, where families feel safe and protected, where our community continues to grow and flourish for generations. Let’s protect the legacy of our rural hospital district, a legacy built on compassion, resilience, and the unwavering belief that our people deserve the very best. Together, we will continue to ensure that the hospital district remains at the heart of our community.
