While most of the XIT Rodeo and Reunion takes place next week, the junior rodeo will kick things off this Saturday, August 2. Younger children and teenagers will have a chance to get in on the rodeo action at the XIT Arena at that time.
The junior rodeo has become a popular event over the years. Kids as young as four and five-years-old are allowed to participate in some of the events, including riding a stick horse around barrels and poles, along with removing a ribbon from a goat’s tail. These events for the youngest rodeo stars are held in a mini-arena that is created on the grass on the north side of the arena.
Events for older kids and teenagers, along with mutton bustin’ for younger kids (riding a sheep), are held in the main arena. These events include, along with the mutton bustin’, barrel racing, pole bending, calf roping, goat tying, breakaway roping and steer riding.
Entries for the junior rodeo will be accepted Saturday morning with a late fee, although hopefully most of those competing entered online in advance. The rodeo begins at 9 a.m.
