NewsFishing Derby is always funFishing Derby is always funIt was a beautiful day Saturday for the city’s 23rd Annual Fishing Derby, but turnout was surprisingly low. Speculation from those present blamed the t-ball and baseball games scheduled at the same times as the derby. Those who weren’t there out, though, because the pond at Lake Rita Blanca was stirring with freshly stocked rainbow trout and kids couldn’t seem to reel them in fast enough. The first fish was caught within 10 minutes of the opening horn by 11-year-old Kase Kitchens. And after that, folks, fish just kept coming in! The Fishing Derby is sponsored by the City of Dalhart Parks Department each year to promote outdoor interests and raise awareness of activities available at local parks. “It’s also just to give the kids something fun to do,” said Dalhart Parks Supervisor Ryan Gonzales. Participants, as usual, were divided first into four age groups and then subdivided between boys and girls, with awards given for first fish caught and first five fish caught in each of the eight groups. The prizes, sponsored by the City of Dalhart Parks Department, included the angler’s choice between small tents, sleeping bags, lanterns, fishing poles, tackle boxes and other outdoor gear. “Now that the Fishing Derby is over, people may want to keep fishing for some of those bigger ones,” Gonzalez added. “This year we stocked with 600 of the 10-to- 12-inch fish, 100 of the 13-to-14-inch, and 50 of the 15-to-16-inch ones, so those are still in there.” Winners of this year’s Fishing Derby are: 3 Years & Younger: Girl – First Fish: Stella Webb Boy – First Fish: Brenden Stewart Girl – First 5 Fish - ------- ------ Boy – First 5 Fish: Brenden Stewart 4 – 6 Years Old: Girl – First Fish: Emmi Rogers Boy – First Fish: Arlen Stewart Girl – First 5 Fish Emmi Rogers Boy – First 5 Fish: Arlen Stewart 7 - 12 Years Old: Girl – First Fish: Ehlena Crabtree Boy – First Fish: Kase Kitchens Girl – First 5 Fish Elisa Serfas Boy – First 5 Fish: Lendon Jurajda 13 – 16 Years Old: Girl – First Fish: Jenna Voss Boy – First Fish: Nathan Bostwick Girl – First 5 Fish Stormie White Boy – First 5 Fish: Xavier Torres For the full story SUBSCRIBE to the online edition of The Dalhart Texan, call (806) 244-4511 to setup a subscription to our physical paper or pick a copy up at one of our many convenient news rack locations.
