Dalhart Council recognizes hungry, awards scholarships

The Dalhart City Councilmen faced a short agenda at their regular meeting Monday night, April 28, with only five brief items up for vote.

The first was a proclamation introduced designating April 2025 as Senior Hunger Awareness Month in the City of Dalhart. Representatives from related agencies were so busy feeding the hungry throughout the month that this was the soonest they could get together for the proclamation signing.

The council next awarded $2,000 scholarships from the Bonnie DeJarnett Scholarship Fund to Quin Moore, who attends Channing High School, and Ben Meyer, Corah Reese and Kathleen Vermedahl, from Dalhart.

Council members scheduled two public hearings for 6:00 pm. May 12, 2025, both to reset hearings previously-scheduled for April 14 but cancelled due to procedural issues.

The first, for Ordinance 2025-01, calls for closing, abandoning and vacating all of the following portions of streets in the City of Dalhart: the portion of Austin between Dodson and Carmack; the portion of Carmack between Austin and Beaumont, and the portion of Beaumont between Carmack and Dodson, all of said street portions are bordered by land owned by the same owner.

The second hearing, for Ordinance 2025-03 authorizes the issuance of a special use permit allowing a manufactured home at 801 Tascosa.

Finally, the council approved Resolution 2025- 04, which approved the Settlement Agreement between the cities of Amarillo, Lubbock, Dalhart and Channing and Atmos Energy Corporation regarding Atmos’ application to increase rates filed with the city on October 25, 2024. City Manager J. J. Oznick reported that for the first time in 10 years, Atmos took their fight all the way to the Public Utilities Commission.
