ArchivesDISD hires new Police ChiefDISD hires new Police ChiefThe Dalhart ISD board of trustees met in regular session April 15. With several board members out due to illness or family obligations, there weren’t quite enough present for a quorum, so those present waited for one more to arrive. In the meantime, they heard presentations from students and teachers, including second-graders displaying their computer skills and junior high Gifted and Talented class members sharing about a recent field trip. John Tinsley, the new Police Chief for the Dalhart Independent School District, was introduced, as was DISD Teacher of the Year Sara Sadler, a third grade math and science instructor. Tommy Chisum, Assistant Chief for the Dalhart Volunteer Fire Department, was recognized for assisting students at the Dalhart Elementary School crosswalk each school day. After the meeting began, Superintendent Jeff Byrd shared that enrollment is currently at 1,766 students, up 24 from this time last year. In the past three years, enrollment has increase more than 120 students, Byrd said. He reported on issues with the softball scoreboard, which was supposed to have been installed in January but has encountered a myriad of problems. Via a Zoom call, the installation company confirmed that it was collaborating with another firm to get the requisite parts and that the job would be complete by May or the down payment would be refunded. Byrd discussed a potential billboard fundraiser for the football stadium, with the money raised being used to help with food and other travel expenses for athletes. This was approved later in the meeting. He also updated the board that construction on the new Intermediate School is on schedule and should be ready for move-in prior to the new school year. Following approval of required expenditures for instructional materials, trustees turned their attention to accepting donations, approving the following: o $1,000 to Skills USA from Delco Services o $3,791 for football helmets from Kyle Grimsley o $4,500 for football helmets/uniforms from CyberGrants, a matching grant by State Farm Insurance to the funds from Kyle Grimsley The board appointed Linda Ruiz as Election Judge and Jannell Hartrim as Alternate Election Judge for the upcoming School Board Election.
