ArchivesMeasles case count still increasingMeasles case count still increasingWith the second Texas death from measles last week (the third overall) and the current statewide outbreak at 481 cases and increasing, the community is reminded that even though our local rate is low at seven cases, it’s still not to be ignored. Due to privacy laws, little information, including age or county of residence, can be released about the persons infected; however, one case has been added since last week. Health officials say immunization is the only way to prevent measles. People who are unvaccinated are at a significantly higher risk of contracting measles, and about one in five people who aren’t vaccinated are hospitalized after being infected, according to the CDC. It is important to note that both Dallam and Hartley Counties have very high vaccination rates, and the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine has proven to be 97% effective in preventing the disease with two doses given, and 93% effective with one dose given. The Dalhart Family Medical Clinic has the MMR vaccine available. All residents who would like to be vaccinated or who are unaware of their vaccination status are encouraged to call DFMC at 806-244-5668 or consult their healthcare provider to receive the vaccine. Vaccines are available at the clinic for children with no insurance. Measles usually starts with a fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a sore throat. Within a few days, tiny white spots may appear in the mouth. Around days three to five, a rash spreads from the face downward to the rest of the body. As the rash appears, fever can spike above 104°F. If you suspect you or someone in your family may have measles, avoid close contact with others, especially vulnerable populations such as infants, the elderly or those with compromised immune systems. Please contact your healthcare provider before visiting a medical facility to help minimize the risk of spreading the infection to others.
