Dalhart Becoming Real Center of Dairy Field
April 3, 1925 – 100 years
The Kaufman Creamery reports that $436.24 was paid out to 43 farmers last Saturday for butter fat. The Saturday before, $253 was paid to farmers, and two weeks before, only $190 was paid.
The creamery is having to ship butter from its Liberal creamery to fill the orders that are coming to Dalhart, but farmers are now waking up to the opportunity, the manager says, and it is thought that it will not be long until the output here will be much larger.
There are said to be from 1000 to 1500 Jersey cows in Dallam and Hartley Counties, owned by some 300 farmers.
The average paid to farmers last Saturday was $10.14. Multiplying this average by 300 it can be seen that there is a possible payroll of $3,042 weekly for the farmers of these two counties.
The demand for Kaufman butter is widespread, and there is no reason why the farmers of this community should not receive the big end of the proceeds. The average price paid last Saturday was 41 cents per pound for the butter fat.
The creamery reports 1900 pounds of butter shipped last Monday from Dalhart. The capacity of the plant is ample to take care of all the butter fat that can be brought in from these two counties, and, with the increase the last three weeks it looks like it will not be long until the plant will be running to full capacity.
