The charges stem from a December 30, 2022 arrest at the Trading Post convenience store and gas station in Hartley, when Sebastian Felipe and his traveling companion called the police on themselves. The men were apparently suffering hallucinations that they were surrounded and, when deputies arrived, they ran toward them. The officers thought they were being charged at and drew their weapons and had the men lie on the ground, then immediately noticed the distinct aroma of marijuana in the air. The men told the officers that they were hauling marijuana, and a brief search led to the discovery of the cannabis and the men’s arrests on felony charges. The unnamed companion, an undocumented immigrant, pled guilty at an earlier trial and received five years in prison. At the time of his arrest, Felipe reported his address as, at one time, Arizona and, another, Alabama. He was living in Indiana at the time of his plea agreement, which took place March 3. His case took longer to prosecute due to complications stemming from his accomplice’s trial. Felipe had no prior criminal history.
