Hospital honored for blood drives, next is March 28

Coon Memorial Hospital received the prestigious Star Hospital Award from Our Blood Institute at Coffee Memorial Blood Center on Wednesday. The recognition celebrates the hospital’s achievement in collecting 594 blood products over the past two years, “significantly contributing to the community’s health and well-being,” said Brad Duggan, OBI Executive Director.

“In addition to its impressive collection efforts, Coon Memorial Hospital has actively supported the Dalhart Community Blood Drive, demonstrating a strong commitment to fostering a culture of giving and saving lives within the community.

"We are thrilled to honor Coon Memorial Hospital for their dedication and outstanding contributions to blood donation," Duggan said. "Their efforts not only help meet the urgent need for blood products but also inspire others in the community to get involved."

The hospital’s next Community Blood Drive is set for 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 28. Donors may schedule an appointment by going online at www.obi.org or by calling 877-340- 8777. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Anyone who is healthy and 16 years old or older can give blood. Donors 16 years old must weigh at least 125 pounds and provide signed parental permission. Those 17 years old must weigh at least 125 pounds, while 18-year-olds must weigh at least 110 pounds. All donors must present a photo ID. Donation typically takes only about an hour, and one donation saves up to three lives.

With a severe blood shortage impacting the community and the entire area, donations are more important now than ever. Demand is currently high while donations are declining, leaving hospitals with dangerously low supplies. Every donation can mean the difference between life and death.
