Ground broken for new grain facility

Viterra broke ground Feb. 26 on its newest grain facility, this one located in Dalhart near the intersection of Chamberlain Road and Highway 54. Dallam County Judge Wes Richey and Dalhart Mayor James Stroud participated in the event and received a tour of the site.

The new facility will include a state-of-the-art grain handling system and loop track served by Union Pacific Railroad. Viterra anticipates the site to be completed in mid-2026. It is expected to lead to local job creation, as well as support the local agricultural economy by allowing for more efficient movement of grain from growers to end users, such as area cattle producers.

“I would like to welcome Viterra Grain to the growing number of businesses that have chosen to locate in Dallam County,” Judge Richey said. “I am excited Viterra has expressed their desire to be an active part of our local community as well as a valued, long-term partner in our local economy.”

“This $35 million investment will really bolster our ag industry here,” said Mayor Stroud. “Our community, especially our dairies and cattle producers will greatly benefit from this.”

“Today’s groundbreaking signifies a significant step in enhancing Viterra’s ability to serve the West Texas region and builds momentum toward a stronger network,” said Rayner Freyberg, CEO US & Mexico for Viterra. “We look forward to this facility’s completion and expanding our customer reach.”

“Union Pacific appreciates and values the relationship we have with Viterra to provide safe and reliable service to this growing agricultural market for years to come,” said Jason Hess, Senior Vice President – Marketing and Sales, Union Pacific Railroad. “We innovate for growth just like this, investing more than $10 million per day in infrastructure, technology and network expansion to provide solutions for our customers to win in the marketplace.”
