City Council cancels election

Dalhart citizens gave either a nod of approval or a shrug of apathy to their city leaders this month as no one signed up to run against incumbent City Council members or the Mayor in the next election. The filing deadline was Feb. 14.

With that, the Council canceled the May 3 election during its regular meeting Monday night and approved Resolution 2025-02. This declared the five unopposed candidates, Roger Fleming, Ward 1; Gary Schniederjan, Ward 2; Bruno DeMots, Ward 3; Ty Hancock, Ward 4 and Mayor James Stroud all elected to office for another two years.

The remaining councilmen, Terry Stegall, Ward 1; Clinton Hale, Ward 2; Dennis Rojas, Ward 3 and Gary Messer, Ward 4, were elected in May 2024 and will retain their seats until 2026.

In other business Monday, Councilmen conducted the first reading of Ordinance 2025-02 from the Planning & Zoning Commission to rezone Lot 16 and E1/2 Lot 17, Block 10, Blair Division (1208 Omaha Street) to Special Use, for the purpose of placing a Manufactured Home.

Next, they went into closed session for approximately 20 minutes to return, take no action, and adjourn.

The meeting lasted 29 minutes.

City Council meets at 6:00 p.m. the second and fourth Monday of each month. Meetings are held at City Hall, 205 Rock Island Drive. Council meetings are also available to view on YouTube.
