The Dalhart City Council adopted the 2024-25 budget of $9,476,800 and the property tax rate of .42475 per $100 of valuation at their regular Monday night meeting Sept. 23.

The new budget includes an average pay increase of 3.5%, based on performance, for city employees. It also increases slightly the money to be spent on seal-coating streets, and funds have been set aside for repairing the city swimming pool, which hasn’t been worked on since 2004.

Funds were also earmarked for a new mower for the Parks Department, replacement equipment for the Dalhart Volunteer Fire Department and a replacement backhoe.

The tax rate remains the same as it was for 2023-24.

In other business, the Council approved the first reading of an ordinance to approve rezoning 1208 Channing Street to place a manufactured home.

They also approved a request from the Dalhart Area Chamber of Commerce to close Denrock Avenue from the Fire Station on 1st Street to 5th Street on Oct. 31 from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. for Trunk or Treat, the annual downtown Halloween celebration.

Councilmen approved a resolution denying Southwestern Public Service Company’s proposed surcharge in connection with final rates approved related to its statement of intent submitted on Feb. 8, 2023; authorizing the City’s continued participation with other cities in the alliance of Xcel municipalities (“AXM”) and participation in related rate proceedings; authorizing the hiring of attorneys and consultants; requiring reimbursement of reasonable legal and consultant expenses; finding that the meeting complies with the open meetings act; and making other findings and provisions related to the subject.

They approved appointing Cheyanne Robertson as secretary to the City Council.

In final action, the council approved rescheduling the Oct. 14 City Council meeting to Oct. 7. Oct. 14 is Columbus Day, which is a City holiday.

The meeting, which began at 6:00 p.m., was adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
