Viterra to build grain elevator in Dalhart

Viterra grain company recently announced plans to build a grain facility in Dalhart, which they expect to be completed by mid- 2025. The new facility will be located near the intersection of Chamberlain Road and Highway 54. It will include a state-of-the-art grain handling system and loop track served by Union Pacific Railroad.

“We’re excited to be building in the Dalhart area,” said Viterra spokesperson Hannah Fuxa. “We anticipate that the construction of the new site, along with the completed and operating grain elevator, will lead to job creation, although the exact number of jobs that will be generated is not yet determined. Along with employment growth, we believe this build will support the local agricultural community by expanding our service capabilities and allowing us to efficiently move grain from growers to end users, like the cattle producers in the Dalhart area.”

Dallam County Judge Wes Richey said that he has yet to meet with Viterra representatives but has been told that the current plan is to start construction of the grain elevator in November of this year in order to begin operations in June of next year. He said that it is about a $35 million investment and should employ 12 to 25 people. No tax abatements have been offered to the company,

Richey said.

For those unfamiliar with Viterra, the global company operates a network of local grain elevators with international destination markets, crops facilities, processing plants and port terminals around the world. The company was founded in 1874 in Sioux City, Iowa, as F.H. Peavey & Company. In 1962, it changed its name to Peavey Company, which became a public agriculture organization in 1973.

In 1982, Peavey Company was acquired by ConAgra Food, Inc., making Peavey the country’s largest publicly held grain merchandiser. That same year, ConAgra Foods, Inc. became part of ConAgra Trade Group.

In 2008, investors formed Gavilon and acquired ConAgra Trade Group to focus on its commodity business privately. In 2010, Gavilon acquired DeBruce Companies, thereby significantly expanding its agricultural operation.

In 2013, Marubeni Corporation acquired Gavilon’s agriculture business, then in 2022, Viterra acquired Gavilon’s grain and ingredient business. Finally, in 2023, Gavilon rebranded to Viterra.
