Celebrations signify end of summer break
Two of Sunday’s three planned back-to-school celebrations were wildly successful, while one was cancelled due to staffing issues.
Kid Kraze and It’s About the Kids took place as scheduled at Kella Hill Park, which was swarming with children and parents from 4:00 until around 6:30 p.m., while Splash Bash at the city pool was called off.
Drew Stegall, Youth Minister at New Life Church and Kid Kraze organizer, said that he was very pleased with the turnout.
The annual event, which has been taking place for more than 10 years, traditionally features games, activities and refreshments, all at no cost to those attending. Stegall called it the church’s Mission Project, which they sponsor instead of Vacation Bible School.
In conjunction with Kid Kraze, the organization It’s All About Kids distributes backpacks filled with school supplies each year.
The project is funded by local donations and run by Karen Lang, president, Dee Brown, vicepresident, and Jamey Kvanvig, secretary.
Lang said that this year they distributed 603 backpacks with plans to make 67 more for those left without.
“Everyone who was in line will be served,” she said. “We’re going to make them all and have them ready before school starts.”
She said the event went “really well,” adding “We were there until around 6:30.” It was scheduled to end at 6:00 p.m. Unfortunately, the City of Dalhart was forced to cancel Splash Bash at the city pool. Illness caused a reduction in the number of available lifeguards, and safety is always the city’s top priority.
Sunday was also the last scheduled day for the swimming pool to be open, so it is now closed for the season.
