Students complete Dalhart ISD summer literacy, math school programs for skills enrichment

Nearly 100 hard-working students recently completed summer instruction through federal programs designed to reinforce math and literacy proficiency at Dalhart Independent School District.

Educators for A Bright Beginning promoted the love of reading, fostered oral language and developed writing skills in three- and four-year-olds. The class of 19 was taught by Gloria Amaya, assisted by Crystal Salas, and Elizabeth Flores, aided by Amanda Gonzalez.

Project SMART (Summer Migrants Access Resources through Technology) focused on math and literacy for 69 students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade.

Teaching the kindergarten class was Carol Dixon, aided by Linda Morgan. Cassie Borunda, assisted by

Riley Scruggs, taught first and second-graders. Third and fourth-graders were taught by Jaklyn DeMots, with assistance from Victoria Hinojosa, while Sonia Blain taught fifth and sixth graders. Seventh and eighth-graders were taught by Amendah El-Far; Carol Yocupicio was her assistant.

“The teachers all did a wonderful job, and we appreciate their work,” said program organizer Rachel Rivera.

To applaud the students’ dedication and willingness to spend a few weeks in school reinforcing critical skills, Rivera requested that some local business donate tablets for attendance incentive prizes.

She thanked MAS Trailers, Latham Farm, Top of Texas Real Estate and State Farm Insurance for their generosity and support.
