It’s All About Kids still needs donations

The calendar may have read “First Day of Summer” just last week, but the It’s All About Kids group already has their eyes on the first day of school. Members are busy seeking donations, purchasing supplies and making plans to stuff backpacks that they’ll give away to hundreds of students in early August.

As of Monday morning, the organization had raised just over $8,000 of the $14,000 needed to reach this year’s goal of having 700 supply-stuffed backpacks ready to present.

The donation deadline is July 15, so time is running out to assist this worthy cause. A representative will even come to you at your convenience to pick up your donation – just call Karen Lang at 806-676- 5558 to arrange a pickup date and time.

It’s All About Kids is also now officially a 501(c)3 for tax purposes.

Item donations are welcome, but monetary donations are even more helpful due to the power of shopping in bulk.

On average, school supplies for one child cost between $150 to $200 retail, organizers estimate, which adds up quickly for families with several children in school.

Lang thanked longstanding supporters the Elks Lodge, Farm Bureau and Tractor Supply for providing work and storage space, bottled water and an oversized tub to keep the water cool the day of the event.

It’s All About Kids was started in 2008 by Mary Campbell. The first year they assisted about 200 children with some school supplies and a few treats and games. Now in its 16th year, the project is run by Lang, president; Dee Brown, vice-president and Jamey Kvanvig, secretary.

It has evolved into tailoring backpacks to the Dalhart Independent School District supply lists for each grade from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The group makes up 50 backpacks per grade, for a total of 700. Although the kits are tailored for Dalhart ISD, students from any area school are welcome to receive them.

Per tradition, the backpacks will be given away during the Kid Kraze Days, the annual back-to-school celebration sponsored by New Life Church. It will be held Sunday, August 4, at Kella Hill Park, 3rd Street and Kendrick, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., with the backpack donation beginning at 5:00 p.m.

The first day of school for Dalhart ISD is Aug. 14.
