You may already be a winner… and it’s true!

A local Dalhart man received a nice surprise last week in the form of a text that looked suspiciously like a scam.

Curt Miersma received a text congratulating him on winning a brand new truck and immediately dismissed it as phony. Upon further investigation, he learned that his daughter, Kristy Detwiler, had purchased a raffle ticket in his name for a 2024 Dodge 1500 pickup truck being given away by the Elks Lodges of Texas.

“I’ve never been so surprised,” Miersma said. He added that he doesn’t consider himself as generally lucky.

“I did win a tv about 30 years ago, but that’s it,” he said, “but I couldn’t have done this without Kristy!” Detwiler is president of the Dalhart Area Chamber of Commerce.

Miersma did have to pay sales tax on the vehicle, and he said that he also paid a bit extra for some upgrades and to have it delivered Friday from Marshall, TX.

The statewide raffle was held by the Sweethearts from Elks Lodge across Texas.

In Dalhart, it was run by Karen Lang, who sold Detwiler the winning ticket. Lang also amassed the second-highest amount of ticket money in the state out of 56 competitors.

All of the money raised will be spent on children’s’ programs.
