ArchivesThompson qualifies for state contest with conservation essayThompson qualifies for state contest with conservation essayMattie Thompson, 13, of Hartley, was recently recognized for her prizewinning conservation essay, “May the Forest Always Be With You.” Written for the Texas Conservation Awards Program, sponsored by Hartley Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board and the Association of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the essay won first place at both the district and area levels. So far, Mattie has won $150 in prize money, and she will now compete at the state level in October. “I’m very happy and honored that I had the opportunity to be a part of this. I’m excited I won!” Mattie said. She is the daughter of Mike and Farrah Thompson of Hartley.
