Parks Project pulls in upgrade recommendations

Members of the Dalhart City Council received an update on the Parks Assessment Project at their regular meeting Monday night. Garrett Hubbard, intern with the city’s Parks Department, shared the results of the three programs held so far. The project includes a two-hour program held at each park with an organized activity, snacks and a chance for participants to vote with Monopoly money on their preferences among suggested park improvements specific to each site.

To date, three of the five city parks have been assessed. The first to be considered was Northside Park, at 1000 Dallam Street, on Feb. 10. Although participation was lower than anticipated due to weather, the mostvoted for item was a water feature, which isn’t feasible due to the park’s limited size, Hubbard said. With that option eliminated, the top votegetters were, in order, tetherball, bicycle stands and somersault bars.

Veteran’s Memorial Park, 201 W. 7th Street, was assessed on Feb. 24 in conjunction with a program from the Dallam- Hartley Counties Library. Taking top votes were a mini-library, storybook walk, rubber mulch replacement and tetherball.

Kella Hill Park, located at 1505 E 3rd Street, was reviewed on Mar. 2. The number one item voters wanted was stadium lights for the baseball field across the street, followed by a dirt and chalk baseball diamond, new basketball goals and bicycle stands.

Still to be assessed are Swimming Pool Park, at 622 E. Texas Boulevard and Lake Center Park, at 2222 FM 281. The Swimming Pool Park activity will be a bicycle rodeo on March 23. Suggested upgrades include pool basketball, balance posts, rubber mulch replacement, new springers and bicycle stands/repair stations. The Lake Center Park assessment will be held Apr. 6. Upgrades suggested for that area are a fishing dock, dog park, bicycle stands/repair center and inclusive equipment for children with disabilities.
