Internet, cellular outage unexplained

Dalhart was among many areas impacted by a three-day internet outage this week, when Kinetic by Windstream went out at approximately 1:00 a.m. Monday morning, taking AT&T cellular service with them. Service was finally restored about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday. Many businesses were affected, including fast food restaurants, banks, convenience stores, and the city’s utility payment system.

Kinetic could not or would not say what caused the outage. On Monday, the company advised on their customer service line that the outage would be repaired by 6:45 p.m. that day. On Tuesday, a representative who did not wish to be named said that technicians were “investigating the problem” and that it was affecting several states, including Georgia and Kentucky. When questioned as to whether the cause or repair time had been determined, she responded, “The technicians know what’s going on, but they’re not reporting it in to the office, so they know, but we don’t know here.” On Wednesday and Thursday, the voicemail system at the only telephone number available for Kinetic did not allow for a transfer of calls. Instead, callers were told that a widespread outage was in effect and it was unknown when it would be repaired (even though it had already been repaired by Thursday).

AT&T service technicians were unable to explain why cellular service was affected by the internet outage. A Kinetic chat service manager denied that the internet outage caused the cell phone disruption, insisting that her records showed “only internet outage.” She also had no record for the cause of the outage.

XIT Communications internet was not impacted, but they said they did receive a number of calls requesting service repair.
