Dalhart High School principal killed in early morning car crash Wednesday

Jason ‘Scot’ Wright, principal of Dalhart High School, was killed in an automobile accident early Wednesday morning as he returned from an out-oftown basketball game in Tulia. The two-car collision occurred on US 87, approximately 10 miles east of Hartley, in dense fog and low visibility.

According to a report from DPS, Wright’s vehicle veered into oncoming traffic for an unknown reason, striking a semi truck. Wright was taken to Moore County Hospital, where he died from injuries sustained in the crash. The other driver was not injured.

Wright joined Dalhart Independent School District as DHS principal in 2018. In a written release, Superintendent Jeff Byrd described Wright as “a servant leader for the High School, always doing what he believed was in the best interest of his students and staff. His kindness, strength, wisdom and compassion made him an inspiring role model to the students and staff of the entire District.”

Wright’s wife, Torri, served as school nurse for Dalhart Elementary and Dalhart Intermediate Schools.

The school district provided counselors from DISD and Region 16 all day Wednesday for students and staff, with members of the Dalhart Ministerial Alliance also on hand. The Region 16 Crisis Team was on campus all day Thursday to provide any needed assistance.

“Mr. Wright’s presence will be hugely missed by the District’s students, his fellow administrators, teachers and the entire Dalhart community,” Byrd said. “We extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Wright’s family and encourage everyone to provide support for them throughout this painful time.”

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. today, January 27, in the DHS Auditorium. Horn- Nail-Haggard Funeral Home in Dangerfield TX will be handling all arrangements.
