One, two, three – PUSH!

Dalhart Volunteer Firefighters push their new Rescue Truck into the station Thursday night in a time-honored ceremony dating back to the days of horse-drawn equipment. In the 1800s, after crews returned from a call, the horses were unable to back into the station, which required firefighters to detach the animals and push the equipment into the bay. Over time, as motorized equipment developed, the need to manually move apparatus was gone. However, the legacy of the push-in remained, with many fire departments, including Dalhart, holding the ceremony to celebrate the delivery of a new vehicle. The Dalhart Fire Dept received the 2024 International Rescue Pumper on Dec. 7 but officials were waiting for arrival of all necessary equipment before “pushing it in.”
