Mike Bragg, Dallam and Hartley Counties AgriLife Extension Agent, Agriculture and Natural Resources, officially retired on January 15. He was honored with a plaque for his years of service prior to the sale at the 2023 Bi-County Livestock Show.

4-H members Georgia Bezner and Blair Dahl presented Bragg with his plaque, and Bezner read a short speech in honor of Bragg. That speech is printed below.

“After a long and successful 4-H youth career and now thirty-two years of service to Texas Extension, he is facing retirement. Mike Bragg, Dallam & Hartley Counties AgriLife Extension Agent, Agriculture and Natural Resources will be retiring on January 15, 2023. He has taken the 4-H motto “To Make the Best Better” to heart not only for Dallam and Hartley youth, but also for their parents, farmers, ranchers, gardeners, homeowners, teachers and school districts.

Over the years Mike has planned and conducted producer meetings, worked with 4-Hers and other youth on everything from livestock judging to grass identification to entomology to outdoor cookery. For the adult clientele, he has helped them problem solve as they deal with diseased trees, dying lawns or pest issues.

Now as we look back over his extension career, many fun stories come to mind after taking 4-Hers to county 4-H Camps, to State 4-H Roundup and various field trips. In addition, Mike has always received a great deal of satisfaction in seeing youth learn and grasp new concepts.

Mike always enjoyed visiting with clientele who had questions. He would spend time doing research so he could give the producers accurate information. If necessary, time would be spent calling specialists in our area so he could give good advice. Time was also spent in the field doing research plots and gathering information.

From the beginning of your career when you received “The Texas County Ag. Agents Association New Agents Recognition Award” to last spring when you received the “Panhandle District Extension Excellence Distinguished Service Award”, you have had a successful career. We want to say “thank you” for your 32 years. To show how much we appreciate your assistance in making Dallam & Hartley Counties the best of the 254 counties in Texas, we present you this plaque to honor your many years of service to our counties.” At the end of the sale, High Plains Auctioneers announced that they were donating $500 to start a scholarship fund in honor of Bragg, and asked other businesses and individuals to donate as well.
