City Council approves Tommy Hughes as police chief

Dalhart, TX – On November 7, the Dalhart City Council voted to approve the City Manager’s recommendation of Tommy Hughes for Police Chief. Hughes is currently an accomplished Chief Deputy with the Hartley County Sheriff’s Department with 13 years of experience building and directing effective officers. He has demonstrated expertise in patrol and investigations and is dedicated to maintaining security and safety for citizens by continually updating department procedures.

In the past 13 years, Hughes has gone from basic patrol functions to narcotics investigations to leadership functions. He has also worked in criminal investigations in this community for the Dalhart Police Department. Hughes has worked to obtain three college degrees related to the law enforcement field and a Master’s Peace Officer certification. During his time as Chief Deputy, he has become a certified firearms instructor as well as a pistol mounted optics firearm instructor. Hughes has also taken and passed the Texas Jail Administrators exam through TCOLE. He is a member of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers association.

During his time in the Army, Hughes grew to the rank of Sergeant. He performed roles such as infantry radio operator, infantry team leader, infantry squad leader and Bradley Fighting Vehicle driver, gunner and commander. Hughes served in Kuwait in 1999- 2001, Korea 1999-2000 and Iraq the year of 2005. While in Iraq he served as a gun truck commander and ultimately convoy commander.
Hughes grew up in Dalhart and is married with seven kids and one grandchild on the way.
