Dalhart council discusses boards and commissions volunteers, amends parking ordinance

The Dalhart city council at its May 23 meeting discussed various volunteer boards and commissions, as well as amended an ordinance related to parking on residential lots.

The city appoints volunteers to local boards and commissions twice a year, and “On some boards, we actively solicit folks because we have various technical trades that have to be on there, and we have other boards that don’t requre that, such as P&Z (Planning and Zoning), the Airport Advisory board and the EDC,” said interim city manager Melissa Vossmer. “What is the best way for the princess to be completed, what can we do to encourage more people to reach out and volunteer to serve the city so we can continue to build the volunteer pool the we already have.”

Vossmer said that the volunteer pool begins to build the leaders of tomorrow. She said the city needs to make the public aware of the opportunities.

“How many times a year do we want to appoint? Do we want to formalize the process for appointment? Do we want to develop and actual application process? Vossmer asked. “In most cities that I have served in, they actually do interviews of folks that want to serve on boards and commissions to let you have an idea of what they might bring to the table.

“In a smaller community it’s great because everyone knows everyone, it still, if you’re looking to bring some younger people - and that’s painful to say - but ‘younger’ people into the fold of volunteerism with the city - then outreach is an important part of that.”

Another question for potential volunteers is how much time it will take.

“When you say you’re gonna volunteer you know you’re gonna commit time, but what is that time?”
