Dalhart dancers perform in Nutcracker

By Lorinda Osuna

What Christmas season would be complete without taking in a heartwarming performance of the Nutcracker? Lone Star Ballet dancers graced the stage for their final presentation of the 2021 season on Sunday, December 12 at the Civic Center Complex Auditorium in Amarillo. Dalhart’s very own Maylee Mariscal, Chloe Haaland, Kyrsten Layman, and Gracie Vermedahl donned beautiful costumes and delighted the audiences of all ages with classical ballet dances as the orchestra played.

After weeks of diligent practice, including nightly rehearsals right up until show time, curtains opened at 7 p.m. on December 10. The ornately decorated stage and entryway ushered in nostalgic childhood memories of gathering with loved ones and playing with new toys found under the Christmas tree. Each new scene brought the excitement of the season to life as characters told the story without a word through music and movement.

Dancers in unison flawlessly flowed through the creative set, each group in matching costumes designed for their particular characters. Smiles were seen and laughter heard during intermission while neighbors and friends mingled, munched on popcorn, and shopped for that perfect Nutcracker memento.

Once the show was complete, the dancers met with their audiences for pictures as expressions of thanks and admiration sprang forth from the joyfilled crowd. The 2021 Nutcracker season closed once again this year as all those who took part either as a dancer, set/costume designer, orchestra member, stage hand, mom who gave countless hours to drive to practice and then sell Nutcrackers on performance days, and audience member were taken in, even if just for a couple of hours, to an imaginary world where the merriment of Christmastime through the eyes of a child was brought to life!
