DHCHD announces COVID-19 vaccine policy for ages 5-11

On October 29, the FDA approved the emergency use of the Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine for children aged 5 through 11 years of age. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), vaccination, along with other preventative measures, can protect children from COVID-19 using a lower dose of the safe and effective vaccine already used in adolescents and adults in the US. The CDC also states that the vaccine side effects in children were mild, self-limiting, and like those seen with other routine childhood vaccines and similar to the side effects in adults who received the COVID-19 vaccination. The most common side effect was a sore arm.

With this approval, the Dallam Hartley Counties Hospital District (DHCHD) has decided that their policy will be that parents or guardians who are interested in vaccinating their children will need to make an appointment with their healthcare provider. DHCHD will not be vaccinating 5 – 11 yearolds at vaccine clinics, so parents or guardians will be directed to make an appointment with a healthcare provider. With the help and guidance of the provider, the parent and/or guardian will be able to make a decision for their children.

Per current guidance, vaccinating children will help protect them from getting COVID, therefore, reducing the risk of severe disease, hospitalizations, or developing long-term COVID complications. The vaccine can also help reduce disruptions to in-person learning and activities by helping curb community transmission.

Anyone interested in their child receiving the COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine is asked to please call (806) 244-5668 and make an appointment with their provider. They can also visit for more information.
