Accident on FM 281 claims two lives

A head-on collision between an SUV and a tractor/semi-trailer on Farm-to-Market Road (FM) 281 resulted in two deaths and caused both vehicles to catch on fire in the process.

According to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the collision took place on Wednesday November 10 at about 5:54 p.m. on FM 281 approximately 14.5 miles west of Cactus. The posted speed limit was 75 MPH, and the weather was clear and the road condition was a dry road.

A 2006 Ford Expedition was traveling east on FM 281, and a 2022 Mack Truck tractor/semi-trailer was traveling west on FM 281. The Ford Expedition was traveling on the wrong side of the highway in a no-passing zone, and struck the Mack Truck headon. Both vehicles caught fire on impact, and the Ford Expedition was sent into the south ditch and both the driver and the one passenger in the Expedition were ejected.

The driver of the Expedition was Maximiliano Gabriel-Gutierrez, age 35 of Cactus. He died at the scene and was pronounced deceased by Hartley County Justice of the Peace Beth Moore. The passenger was Juan Lopez, age 20 of Cactus.

Lopez was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital with serious injuries, and according to the report by DPS, is in stable condition. Neither person was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

The driver of the Mack Truck was Julio Niubo-Olazabal, age 55 of Dalhart. He also died at the scene and was pronounced deceased by Hartley County Justice of the Peace Beth Moore. Niubo-Olazabal was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.

The accident was investigated by DPS Highway Patrol Troopers.
