Local students do well at State Fair of Texas

Several Dallam County 4-H students exhibited animals at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas during October. Seven students had animals that placed tenth or higher in their respective classes.

At the Pan American Livestock Exposition, in the category of Breeding Gilts, Preston Ralston’s Hampshire won first place in Class 11 and Payton Ralston’s Hampshire won first place in Class 12. Each animal then moved on to be judged for a chance to be named Grand Champion Hampshire, and Payton Ralston’s Hampshire was named Grand Champion while Preston Ralston’s Hampshire was named Reserve Grand Champion. Payton and Preston are brother and sister, so the siblings exhibited the top two Hampshire Gilts at the exposition. Also at the Pan American Livestock Exposition, in the category of Poland China Gilt, Payton Ralston placed fourth in Class 14.

In the Youth Market Barrow show, in the Other Cross category, Georgia Bezner placed second in Class 30. In Hampshire Class 7, Allison Lackie placed third. In the Light OPB category, Payton Ralston placed eighth in Class 18, and in the Dark OPB category, Scarlett Pool placed ninth in Class 1. In the Other Cross category, Autumn Hale placed tenth in Class 25.

In the Youth Breeding Gilts show, in the Hampshire category, Payton Ralston placed second in Class 11 and Preston Ralston placed third in Class 10. Preston also placed fourth in the Duroc category in Class 7. In the Landrace category, Scarlett Pool placed fifth in Class 12, and in the Crossbred gilt category, Preston Ralston placed sixth in Class 5.

In the Youth Market Lamb show, in the Medium Wool category, Jaylan Miller placed third in Class 12.
