George Strait to perform at Houston Rodeo

By Madalyn Mendoza

Jun. 24 — Texas-sized news came out of the “Blue Clear Sky” on George Strait’s 69th birthday: The King will cap off the Houston Rodeo’s entertainment lineup next year.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo announced that Strait will perform a full-length concert at NRG Stadium on March 20, 2022, the final day of the rodeo, marking his 31st performance at the event. Unlike the rest of the entertainment lineup, a rodeo competition will not precede the King’s show. Tickets will go on sale to the public on June 24 at 10 a.m., the waiting room opens at 9:30 a.m. The rodeo is implementing a limit of four tickets per person.

The 2022 installment of the experience is the 90th anniversary of the Houston Rodeo. The Grammy Award winner has been part of the entertainment offerings since he was a “young troubadour” in 1983. “What better way to celebrate the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s 90th anniversary than with a special, concert-only performance by the ‘King of Country’ music himself,” Rodeo CEO Chris Boleman said in the announcement. “After a couple of particularly challenging years, our thousands of dedicated volunteers simply can’t wait to welcome everyone back to the Rodeo grounds for a Texas-sized celebration of Western heritage that will be well worth the wait.”

Though tickets to Strait’s March 20 show are for the concert only, other rodeo activities will be open to the public. The rest of the Houston Rodeo lineup will be announced at a later date. The rodeo will run from February 28 to March 20, 2022.
