Texline Tornadoes receive state championship rings

THE DALHART TEXAN

While it has been over three months since the Texline Tornadoes won the Class 1A state basketball championship, they had one final ceremony to commemorate their title as they received their state championship rings on Tuesday June 22 at the Texline gym.

The brief ceremony started off with a prayer and short introduction by Texline superintendent Terrell Jones. Head Coach Coby Beckner then gave a speech thanking the community for its support and talked about the year the team had and how proud he was of them.

After that, Beckner present the players with their rings while saying a few words about each player. He started with the freshmen and worked his way up to seniors Colton Luther and Sam Montes. Rings were also presented to Jones and Principal Ross Perschbacher. Assistant Coach Travis Stump gave Beckner his ring, and then Beckner presented Stump with a ring.

Some Texline Junior High girls came down out of the stands to lead the crowd in singing Texline’s school song, which officially ended the ceremony. All those who received a ring gathered around a table with all of the team’s playoff trophies, including the state championship trophy, and the crowd was given a chance to take photos of the team. The Tornadoes are only losing two seniors and are returning a number of very good players next year. One of those players is Will Luther, who was the TABC (Texas Association of Basketball Coaches) Class 1A Player of the Year and has been named All-State two straight years. He will be a senior next year, as will Noel Lozano, who was also named All-State this year and has been All-Region two straight years.
