THE DALHART TEXAN

When the 2020 XIT Rodeo & Reunion had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one group that was affected in particular were the young ladies who were candidates to be the XIT queen. They included Kaytly Clift, Gillian Darcy, Emory Horn,Maeloree Kirby, Preslie Poling, and Taylor White. 2019 XIT Queen Kaylee Mitchell ended up continuing her reign through 2020, becoming the first queen to serve for two years, but now that most of the restrictions that were in place due to the pandemic have lifted. the 85th XIT Rodeo & Reunion is going full steam ahead and a new queen will be crowned on Saturday August 7.

Kaytly Clift and Preslie Poling are candidates again this year, and are joined by Sam Unruh. Clift and Unruh are both students at Stratford High School, while Poling is a student at Clayton High School in New Mexico. Candidates have to live within a 50-mile radius of Dalhart, be an incoming sophomore, junior or senior for the 2021-2022 school year, be unmarried, and be able to ride a horse.

Queen candidates have a number of duties that they have to perform in the weeks leading up to XIT. They spoke at the Rotary Club luncheon on Thursday June 17 to promote this year’s rodeo. They will help with work at the rodeo arena, and will sell XIT merchandise at select places at different times. The candidates are also a big part of “Plaster Day.” which is the day when the

XIT posters are hung up around Dalhart and in other nearby locations. They will be doing that tomorrow, after an interview with KXIT radio.

The queen is selected by judges based on performance during an interview and also based on horse-riding ability during the queen contest, which will be held on Thursday August 5 in the XIT arena at 8:30 a.m. The candidates and current queen Kaylee Mitchell will ride with flags each night of the rodeo, and will also ride in the XIT parade on the Saturday morning of the rodeo.

The coronation of the new queen will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday August 7 in the arena.
