Grant approved for Rita Blanca Lake Center additions

by Bill Kelly

The City of Dalhart recently received a grant of $150,000 from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission to add a splash pad and additional playground equipment to the area near the Rita Blanca Lake Center. The grant will be combined with matching money for the improvements. Two projects will be paid for with the grant and matching funds. One will be a splash pad that will be located next to the lake center that will incorporate a train theme. The other project will be additional playground equipment that will be added to the playground equipment that is already located between the lake center and Rita Blanca Lake itself.

The city has already been able to raise more than the $150,000 that was needed to match the grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission. The Dalhart Economic Development Commission will provide $150,000, and the Rotary Club mobilized a fundraising campaign that came up with nearly $48,900 from local individuals and businesses, including Hilmar Cheese and Hartley County. The total cost of the project is $350,000, which is why the extra was needed, and the City of Dalhart is providing the final $1,100 to meet that total. Dallam County has also pledged to provide $150,000 for future maintenance and operation of the splash pad and equipment.

Dallam County Judge Wes Ritchey said that the hope is to eventually add other improvements to the area near Rita Blanca Lake as well. Those include an amphitheater that could be used for putting on plays, showing movies, concerts, etc. A miniature-golf course is another future possibility, as are expanded camping facilities.

The splash pad is expected to be completed by the spring of 2022, and the extra playground equipment is also expected to be installed by that time as well.
