School board considers 2021-22 budget

by Drew Stegall

The Dalhart Independent School District held a special board meeting Tuesday in order to host a budget workshop, as well as consider four action items and personnel. A majority of this meeting was a workshop to help educate the board on how to set the budget for the following school year. A budget proposal for the school district is required by the state of Texas before June 19th and acceptance of the budget is due on June 30th. The budget workshop was spearheaded by District Business Manager Brian Walton. It is important to note that increase in faculty salary was a high priority of discussion for this budget workshop. The board was helped by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) in discussing raise of salary. The board also discussed a facility improvement plan. This improvement plan highlighted entrances and parking lots that have degraded through the years.

This special meeting also had the school board act upon four action items. First, the board considered the contract for food services for 2021-2022. The board approved the contract with SFE. Next, the board has to approve any purchases made that are $25,000 and more. There were no purchases of this price presented at this meeting. The board had to consider approval of 2020-2021 budget amendments. There were only a few adjustments and the board approved them without issue. Finally, the board considered the purchase of one new bus. “Some of the busses we have are over twenty years old,” Walton reported. It is hoped that grants would help pay for a newer bus. However, the board decided that more information was needed about the different grant options before they made a decision to purchase a new bus. This action item was tabled for later discussion. The board then discussed matters related to personnel. This includes resignations, new employment, and extended leaves. This portion of the special meeting was presented to the board of trustees by Superintendent Dr. Joe Alcorta.

The Dalhart School board of trustees will meet again for a regular meeting on June 22, 2021. This meeting will have the board make changes (if needed) and approve the budget for the 2021-2022 school year.
