City to offer $1 million for former Shopko building

THE DALHART TEXAN

The City Council of Dalhart met for a special meeting Tuesday evening in the City Council Chambers at City Hall. This meeting was relatively short with only two items on the agenda.

First, the City Council had an executive meeting that was closed to the public under chapter 551.072 for
discussion of Real Property. Second, the board met to consider and act upon purchase of Lots 1-20, Block 6, Blair Division, City of Dalhart, Dallam County, Texas. This property has a street address of 609 Liberal Street. This location was formerly the shopping centers Alco and Shopko.

The contents of this City Council meeting are also available through the City of Dalhart’s Youtube channel. Newly elected Mayor Justin Moore started the meeting with a prayer. “Father, I ask that you lift us up tonight. That you guide us. That you lead us in the right direction to make the right decision for our city and for the taxpayers. I ask that you help us to always do what’s right, not necessarily what’s popular, Lord.” After this prayer, the meeting became private for twenty minutes as the City Council held the executive meeting. When the meeting reconvened, Moore announced that no action was taken on the discussion of real property.

After much deliberation, council member Tim Yee made a motion to purchase the property on 609 Liberal Street for the price of $1 million. This money will come out of the city’s reserves. This means that taxes will not be raised in order to purchase this property. The council voted unanimously to move forward with this purchase. The city will offer $1 million to purchase this property with a contingency that the current owner fixes three glass windows at the front of the building.
