Healthcare Foundation awards scholarships for 2021

by Rhonda Butters

The Dr. Cunningham Scholarship Fund was established in 2019 in memory of John H Cunningham, Sr. MD for his 42 years of service in Dalhart. Cunningham delivered hundreds of babies at Coon Memorial Hospital and encouraged many young students to enter the healthcare field. “Give $42” is the annual theme for the Dr. Cunningham Scholarship Fund campaign in honor of his 42 years of service to Dalhart. The funds are used to provide scholarships annually as well as annually depositing to the permanent fund at the Amarillo Area Foundation so that eventually – Dr. Cunningham Scholarships will be awarded forever.

The DHC Healthcare Foundation offered scholarships to a broader spectrum of students this year. The scholarships were open to high school graduates from Dallam & Hartley Counties that will be entering healthcare studies, DHCHD employees wanting to further their education, and residents of Dallam & Hartley Counties who want to enter a healthcare career. Requirements are a high school diploma, a 3.0 GPA, and plan to attend college this coming fall semester.

The DHC Healthcare Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the John H. Cunningham, Sr, MD Memorial Scholarship for 2021. These students are currently employed in the Hospital District. Riley Bochatey, Admitting Clerk in Senior Care Solutions, Berenice Maturin, LVN, and Zayra Maturin, LVN, will be awarded $1,500 each to continue their education. Funds are paid directly to their college or university in segments for their fall and spring semesters.
