THE DALHART TEXAN

We’ve taken a look at some of the most notable stories of 2015 impacting the residents of Dallam and Hartley Counties.

1. El Nino

Most of Texas, including the panhandle, had some much needed relief from the drought conditions that have plagued the region over the last several years thanks to an El Nino system.

An increase in rainfall over the last year caused some problem with planting, delaying both the corn and cotton planting seasons. However, the wet weather was also a contributing factor in crop production throughout the season, and better pasture conditions have allowed many ranchers to begin replenishing herds that were depleted during the drought years.

2. JBS Pork

JBS USA Pork purchased Cargill Pork in a $1.45 billion deal, which was announced jointly by the two companies in July.

The purchase included two meat processing plants, five feed mills and four hog farms, including the farm located northwest of Dalhart.

Cargill Pork began operations in Dalhart in 2011 and recently completed updates to the housing of sows.
