Garcia Awarded Four Year Scholarship To Attend Texas Tech
Karol Garcia, a senior at Dalhart High School, has been chosen to receive the four-year Thoma Scholars Program scholarship to pursue her higher education at Texas Tech University beginning in the fall of 2025.
The Thoma Scholars Program aims to broaden access to higher education for promising rural students in Northwest Oklahoma, West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. It covers the full cost of attendance, including tuition, fees, housing and meals, books and other educational expenses, and allows each recipient to study abroad. Each scholarship recipient will receive comprehensive support from Texas Tech, including career-aspirations coaching, on-campus programming, leadership training and access to academic support and counseling. The program was established by the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation, which has partnered with both Texas Tech University and Oklahoma State University to help rural and first-generation scholars reach their fullest potential.
“This is an amazing opportunity,” Garcia said. “I am just so thankful, and I truly appreciate everyone who helped me through the application process.”
The process included completing and submitting the application, three essays, three references and a letter of recommendation. The next step was an interview, which she must have aced, because the next thing she heard was that she had received the scholarship, she said.
"We are incredibly proud of Karol for earning this exceptional scholarship," said Staci Maddox, principal of Dalhart High School. "This award is a testament to her hard work and commitment to excellence."
Garcia has demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and leadership throughout her high school career. She has been a member of National Honor Society both last year and this, and she is currently the organization’s secretary. She is also secretary of Interact, the Rotary-sponsored service club for high school students. She is a Sub Deb, as well as a true athlete. She competed in basketball, volleyball, tennis and cross country for DHS.
Garcia plans to major in kinesiology at Texas Tech, then go on to medical school with an end goal of becoming a pediatrician. She is the daughter of Angelica and Marcelino Garcia.
