Voters cast their ballot in the statewide primary run-off election Tuesday.

Results were available from the Office ofthe Secretary of State.On the Republican ballot, voters had the opportunity to decide between Gary Gates and Wayne Christian for railroad commission. State-wide, Christian received 192,599 votes (50.99 percent), and Gates received 185,887 votes (49.11 percent).

The Dalhart City Council met on Tuesday evening, May 24. There were only two agenda items.

A public hearing was held on Resolution 2016-08 to determine conditions described as unsafe and dangerous on property located at 104 Maple. A review of the condition of the property and pictures were shown to the council by Laura Mize, with the code enforcement department.

All fifth grade students at Dalhart Intermediate School celebrated the end of the school year and the end of their time at DIS by leaving a painted handprint on a wall in the Lego Gym. Pictured leaving their mark are Mason Palmer, Reese Wieck, Jasmine Quiroz, Evangelene Lucas, Eric Ruiz and Colton Bruce.

Both the Dallam and Hartley County Commissioners’ Courts met at 10 a.m. Monday in a special meeting in Dalhart.

There were two agenda items. The first one was the consideration of hiring a 4-H Extension Agent. Brandon Dukes, District 1, District Extension Administrator of Amarillo, made the presentation on hiring Bailey Wright. Wright is a lifetime 4-H member in Lubbock. She is knowledgeable about 4-Hand the program. Dallam County Judge Wes Ritchey told the commissioners she would bring a lot to the county.

Dalhart High School’s Golden Wolf Band, directed by Jim and Nicole Paslay, presented the annual spring concert Thursday night in the high school auditorium. Following the concert, band students were recognized and presented with awards for their achievements during the 2015-16 year.

Charlie Rowell, Josef Baumert and Desiree Simmons were awarded the Golden Wolf Drum Major Awards in recognition of their service to the Golden Wolf Band during the the 2014-2015 year.

Dalhart’spolice chief reportedly resigned Friday.

According to Dalhart City Manager James Stroud, chief Gary Sinclair gave a verbal resignation Friday and then retracted it.

Three area high schools celebrated graduation Friday night. Channing, Hartley and Texline schools recognized the achievements of the Class of 2016, awarding diplomas to nine in Channing, 10 in Hartley and seven in Texline. Top, The Hartley High School graduates gathered together after their graduation ceremony while awaiting family in the reception area.

Severe weather rumbled through the region Monday evening, with six tornadoes reported in the Northwest Texas panhandle and Oklahoma panhandle, according to information from the National Weather Service in Amarillo. Two of those reports were in Dallam County.

Commencement exercises are tonight for three of the Dallam and Hartley County high schools. Channing, Hartley and Texline High Schools will hold graduation tonight at 7 p.m. Dalhart High School will hold graduation in one week, May 27, at 7 p.m.

Sunday, May 15, was observed as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the following week is observed as National Police Week. This year marks the 25th anniversary of honoring our law enforcement heroes following a proclamation in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy to claim May 15 and a joint resolution established by Congress in the same year to claim the week.

National Police Week gives special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

Both the Dallam and Hartley County Commissioners met on Monday morning, May 9.

The Hartley County Commissioners met and voted to move their June meeting day to Friday, June 10 as on their regular meeting date of June 13 they will be at a county judges and commissioners meeting.

They discussed property hail damages and repairs. They voted to go ahead and replace the roof at the annex building in Dalhart at 701 Texas Boulevard and the vehicles.

Danny Smallwood, Zelda Lang and Lola Barrow were appointed to canvass the returns and declare the results of the election held Saturday, May 7. The results were accurate.

The oath of office was given to Tim Yee, new councilman for Ward 4, and Robin Scott, new councilwoman for Ward 3, and incumbents Kerry Miller and Clinton Hale, who are beginning their new terms.

Dalhart Intermediate School held the annual science fair Thursday, May 5 and recognized the top three entries, as well as 20 honorable mentions. Fifth grade student Zoe Meeks placed first for her experiment, “Do genetics effect fingerprint patterns?”
