The Court Appointed Special Advocates, CASA, saw a need for more space for supervised visitation for children in the custody of Children’s Protective Services, CPS. CASA asked the ladies of Eta Upsilon Sorority to consider taking on a project to remodel space at the Dallam County Courthouse.

On Tuesday afternoon, Dalhart Elementary School hosted an after school reception to honor two teachers taking retirement.  Debbie Walker has taught for 30 years and Jayne Hill for 33 years.
    Debbie Walker graduated from Panhandle State in 1979 and immediately began teaching grade school in Dalhart that fall.

On Tuesday, May 12th, just as lunch began, Lt. Darin Davis with the Dalhart Police Department was dispatched to the Sands Motel located on Highway 54 East.  A disturbance occurred at the motel regarding the unauthorized use of a motel room and the owner of the motel called police. 

Armed Forces Day is Saturday, May 16th.  The day was created in 1949 in order to consolidate the military services in the Department of Defense and was intended to replace separate days for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.  President Harry S. Tammy Stamps, Health Career Promotion Coordinator with AHEC and Cindy Bryant, teacher, presented awards to the students in the AHEC I course on Tuesday, May 12th.  The course is a health sciences education course offered as an elective and requires the completion of nine modules of study.  Each student is required to give 50 service hours to a local health related business.

Members of the Dalhart Junior High School drama class solved a murder mystery Thursday evening, May 7th.  The murder occurred in a 1950’s malt shop in Craig Sodaro’s play entitled “The Nifty Fifties Malt Shop Murder.”  Director and drama teacher, Kathryn Bassett, guided the 6th, 7th and 8th graders through a stellar performance.

The school recently received a visit from Micah Hanbury and his reptile friends.  This is Mrs. Kathy Claborn’s kindergarten with Micah Hanbury and Bulma, an albino Burmese Python.  

Dalhart’s Post Master, Pam Dixon, retired from the United States Postal Service at the end of March, after serving as Post Master since 2004.  Pam accepted an opportunity for early retirement from the USPS, after 25 years of service overall.

The Red Cross is seeking individuals to take part in training in Dalhart and become a disaster action team (DAT).  A disaster action team (DAT) consists of Red Cross volunteers who are trained, empowered and prepared for immediate response in the event of a disaster.  DAT members are not generally policemen, firemen, or members of the city’s emergency response teams.  In case of disaster emergency responders already have important jobs to do and could not serve in the capacity of a Red Cross DAT member.

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs traveled to the Texas panhandle last Friday, May 8th.  Stops included Dalhart, Hereford, Lubbock and Wichita Falls.  She addressed local leaders and residents about the statewide economic outlook.  Ms. Combs began her talk in Dalhart at 8:30 a.m. at the First National Bank community room. 

A fire at Wilder Farms Corporation lead to a donation by the Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Companies to both the Dalhart and Texline Fire Departments.  The donations are part of the insurance company’s policy to provide funds to fire departments that fight fires in rural areas and involve properties insured by the Texas Farm Bureau. 

Two local groups teamed up for a successful fundraiser on April 24-25.  It all started as two separate ideas and merged into one to help each other and even then, went beyond that.  Capital Farm Credit of Dalhart donated some used furniture no longer needed to the Dalhart Pregnancy Resource Center.  The board that oversees the center had decided to take all the furniture offered, use what they could for the center, and sell the rest probably at a garage sale.  Teens from the First Baptist Youth Group graciously helped move the donated furniture to the pregnancy center.   At about that time, the First Baptist Youth were discussing having a garage sale to raise funds for attendance to youth camp.

Dalhart Girl Scouts presented Terri Hein with Bank of America  and Krista Jurajda with A to Z Home Center  special recognition plaques for their  assistance during Girl Scout Cookie Sales.  Cookie booth sales took place in the Bank of America lobby and in the foyer at A to Z Home Center.  Dalhart Girl Scouts sold over 4100 boxes of cookies during their annual cookie sale.  Money raised helps to support the local  and national  Girl Scout program.

At the Diocesan Catholic Schools’ Awards Ceremony on April 26, Barbara Kaul was recognized “Teacher of the Year” by St. Anthony’s Catholic School.  Barbara has taught 2nd , 3rd and , 4th graders at St. Anthony’s for the past 20 years. Before coming to St. Anthony’s she taught in Perryton, Texhoma and Grand Prairie.  She was chosen “Teacher of the Year” for her caring attitude to all of her students, her ability to interact in a positive manner with her colleagues, and her overall upbeat disposition.  

The C Bar C Chuck Wagon Team won 2nd over-all at the Duke of the Dutch Ovens, Chuck Wagon Cook-off in Clovis NM. on April, 25th.  Eleven chuck wagon teams participated.  They won 1st on Gravy, 2nd on Dessert, 2nd on Bread, tied for fourth on Meat, and 2nd Overall.  They received a 17”lodge cast iron skillet, 4 Duke of the Dutch Ovens Aprons, a goodie bag and cash prizes.  Wagons were not judged.  The Chuck Wagon Cook-off was in conjunction with the Joe’s Boot Shop 5th Annual Calf Roping Competition at the Curry County Fairgrounds. 

Jim Chandler, 2009 President of the Dalhart Board of Realtors, presents a Plaque of Appreciation to Joan Cumming, the 2008 Dalhart Board of Realtors President and current Secretary/Treasurer.

     Kamal Babla, owner of the Sands Restaurant on Highway 54, has transformed the restaurant in the year that he has been owner.  One very visible renovation is a sizeable change.  The old “Sands Restaurant” sign in front of the business has come down after 47 years and a new sign has been erected, and its design is one that should last for another 47 years.

This past spring, Dalhart FFA members had a year to remember while traveling to the major livestock shows located in Fort Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, and Houston. The FFA members exhibited over 31 projects and had 13 projects make the sale or get premium money at these major stock shows.
