Nearly 120 years ago, Richard Sears hired Alvah C. Roebuck to help him with his watch company, and in 1893 the two became Sears, Roebuck and Co.  In the 1890’s, the mail order industry for Sears, Roebuck and Co. flourished, which lead to the introduction of the Sears catalog in 1895.  The first catalog, consisting of 532 pages, offered shoes, women’s garments, wagons, fishing tackle, stoves, furniture, saddles and bicycles.

Flash forward to 2010, and Sears, known around the world, is coming to Dalhart.  The Dalhart store is located at 7th Street and Tennessee Boulevard.  Many remember that the location was once the home for Ranch Market, but has been vacant for several years.

The Dalhart Sears store will provide the appliances that people have come to rely upon with brands such as Kenmore, Hotpoint, Whirlpool and LG.  Anything from lawnmowers to refrigerators and microwaves to tools and televisions will soon be available.  The infamous Sears catalog is also an exciting feature of the retailer coming to town.  Items may be purchased in-store or online with delivery to the store.

Mike and Marcy Willis are the proprietors of the new store.  Mike Willis has been in the construction business for many years and that experience certainly came in handy when the renovations began at the store.  He noted, “We’ve put in some long hours getting ready for this.”  Long hours are expected to pay off soon when the store opens on January 27th.  Marcy is the Comptroller for Hart Motors.

From the outside, it seems impossible that the store will open its doors in just two weeks.  As merchandise is arriving daily, shelves are still being built to hold the multitude of items for home and lawn.  On the inside, a sea of newly delivered washers and dryers line the showroom.  Each still needs to be removed from its box and properly displayed.

The City of Dalhart has also anticipated a high volume of business for Dalhart’s new Sears by placing plenty of trash receptacles for cardboard on location.  Willis stated, “We have a lot of work ahead of us, but it is very exciting to see it coming together.  We may have a few things left to do, but we will be ready to open.”

A great advantage of shopping at the Sears store for items that will need to get ordered is the savings for shipping costs.  Items shipped to the store will save the purchaser the cost for shipping.  Willis noted, “That could be a huge savings depending upon the item bought.”

Anyone who ever shopped at Ranch Market will be amazed by the renovations to the location.  Everything is shiny and new and it’s very likely that something within the store will spark more than a casual interest.
