The HOSTS Reading Program at Dalhart Intermediate School held its annual Mentor Appreciation Event on Thursday, April 23. A brunch was held in the school cafeteria for the HOSTS students, mentors and substitute mentors. The community volunteers were honored for all the time and devotion they have given during this school year. Each regular mentor has come to school at least once a week to help students with reading skills. Substitutes were "on call" to assure that each HOSTS student would have a caring adult to help them. All of the 120 volunteers were presented a small notepad/business card holder as an appreciation gift. First State Bank provided these gifts. The mentors also received certificates and photos of themselves with each of their students. Personnel from the bank attended and explained that their support of the HOSTS program started years ago as a part of "America’s Promise", which was begun by retired General Colin Powell. First State Bank continues to assist this program as a part of their community support. We greatly appreciate their assistance.

The HOSTS students were given a certificate of completion and photos of each of their four mentors and themselves.

The serving table was decorated with cloths of soft spring colors. A photo of General Powell and a miniature red wagon, which is the symbol of "America’s Promise", were also table decorations. The refreshments included fruit platters, cinnamon rolls and drinks. First State Bank donated the drinks, fruit platters and paper goods. The homemade cinnamon rolls were compliments of the DISD Cafeteria. Mazzios supplied the drink cups. Our HOSTS program is so grateful for the support and generosity of these Dalhart businesses.

The Cargill Cares Committee recently donated funds to purchase some special "Welcome Back" gifts for our mentors next Fall. We appreciate Mr. Ted Hoover and the Cargill Cares groups of Ag Horizons, Cargill Cattle Feeders, LLC and Cargill Sweet Bran for their support of our program.

Anyone in the community who desires to become a mentor in this very successful volunteer program is invited to call 244-7382. Scheduling of mentors for the 2009-2010 school year is taking place now. Mentors usually come to school once a week for 50 minutes to assist a student with various reading skills. As a mentor, a person has the opportunity to touch and influence a child’s life in a most meaningful way.
