A time to Remember, A Time to Cry Out…

Abraham Lincoln spoke these words; “It has seemed to me fit and proper that the gracious gifts of the most high God be solemnly, reverently and graciously and gratefully acknowledged.”

Reviewing the wonderful things God has done for us and given us is not only healthy; it is grounded in God’s Word. “Remember His wonders which He has done, His marvels and the judgments spoken by His mouth.”  Ps 105:5

At times in Israel’s history they forgot to remember; as they left Egypt they forgot the miracles, they did not remember His kindness, and they rebelled by the Red Sea.  When He fed them, they craved food from “home” and begged for meat.  They spent time grumbling in their tents and did not obey the Lord.  They were bent on rebellion, and they wasted away in their sin.  (Ps. 106)  BUT, when they realized they were wrong and cried out to God, He remembered His covenant with them, and because of His great unfailing love, He saved them.  Verse 47-8 says, “Save us, O Lord our God… that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise…Praise be to the Lord.”

How easy it is for us to come to God in prayer dumping our laundry list and our want list before Him, expecting a “quick fix.”  I have walked my Christian journey for many years doing just that!  Recently I learned that “only fools rush in!”  Israel finally came to their senses and realized their extreme need for Him.  “But He took note of their distress when He heard their cry; for their sake He remembered His covenant and out of His great love He relented.”  (Ps. 106:44-5)  They said “…Save us O Lord our God,…that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise.” (verse 47)

Take some time this Thanksgiving to make an actual list of the blessings God has given you and your family.  As you gather with friends and relatives, read aloud your thanksgiving list and praise Him.  Then, cry out to Him for our Nation and the obvious needs that plague her.  Over and over He has promised that if we cry out, He will hear!
