     Title: Brewer to retire after more  than three decades of dedicated service

Picture it! Dalhart, 1962. Mr. Duane Brewer pulls into town on a crisp, cold January day in his Studebaker. As he gazes across the town and draws in a deep breath of the frosty air, he knows he is where he belongs. And, little did Dalhart know at the time what an amazing impact this newcomer would have on our community.

The icon of Dalhart Federal Savings & Loan Association for over three decades, Mr. Duane Brewer, President and CEO of the Association, will retire from his position on May 31, 2009. After 34 dedicated years of outstanding service, Mr. Brewer will leave some mighty big shoes to be filled. Mr. Brewer will continue to serve on the Board of Directors.

As he gazes across the town and draws in a deep breath of the frosty air, he knows he is where he belongs. And, little did Dalhart know at the time what an amazing impact this newcomer would have on our community.

    The icon of Dalhart Federal Savings & Loan Association for over three decades, Mr. Duane Brewer, President and CEO of the Association, will retire from his position on May 31, 2009. After 34 dedicated years of outstanding service, Mr. Brewer will leave some mighty big shoes to be filled. Mr. Brewer will continue to serve on the Board of Directors. A reception in honor of Mr. Duane Brewer will be held on Friday, May 1, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the DFS&L lobby. The officers and staff of DFS&L invite the Dalhart community to come by and congratulate Duane.

    After his retirement, Mr. Brewer and his wife, Cecillia plan to stay in Dalhart and hope to do some traveling throughout the United States. Mr. Brewer will stay active in the community and supporting Dalhart. Mr. Brewer conveyed, “I have truly been blessed. I have had the privilege of working with the finest mentor bankers, teachers and staff in this community.”

    Duane and his wife, Cecillia have three children and six grandchildren. Their son, Kyle Brewer and his wife, Stevie, live in Dalhart and have three children, Kylie, Alex and Rhianna. Kyle is employed at TKO Gas Company and Stevie is the Director of Activities at Coon Memorial Nursing Home. Their daughter, Heather Fixsen also lives in Dalhart with her two children, Ashley and Zane. Heather is employed at XIT Communications. They also have one great-grandchild, Ashley’s son, Gage. Their son, Aaron Brewer and his wife, Jeri, live in Amarillo and have one daughter, Brianne. Aaron is employed at Eye Mart Express and Jeri is employed at Budget Rent-A-Car.

    Mr. Brewer was born in Lamesa, Texas on May 2, 1939, moving with his family to a farm near Altus, Oklahoma when he was 10-years-old. He had his early schooling and graduated from Centralvue High School in Russell, Oklahoma in 1957. He attended Southwestern State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1962, with a major in Mathematics and Business. He has done graduate work at West Texas State University in Canyon and at the University of Houston. He is a graduate from both the Intermediate and Advanced Program for Savings and Loan Associations at Texas Tech University, having received this degree in 1981.

    Mr. Brewer moved to Dalhart in January, 1962, where he was employed with the Dalhart Public Schools as a Mathematic teacher until May, 1975. During that time, he received five Distinguished Teacher Awards.

    Mr. Brewer is a member of the Dalhart Rotary Club and Past President of the Club for 1979-1980. He joined Rotary in 1975. He is a Paul Harris Fellow which is a special recognition of selective members by the Rotary Club. He is a Past President of the Rita Blanca Girls Little Dribblers Association, serving in that office in 1987. He was the recipient of the Boy Scouts of America District Award of Merit in 1979.

    Mr. Brewer serves on the Board of Directors for the XIT Museum and on the DECA Board. Mr. Brewer was also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Texas Omega Processing Systems in Dallas, a data processing company. He was also a member of the Financial Managers Society and of Real Estate Appraisers. He served on the Hartley County Appraisal District Board of Directors from 2001-2007.

    During the Chamber Banquet in 2003, Mr. Duane Brewer was named as the 2002 Outstanding Citizen of the Year. He was presented a gold watch from First National Bank, a plaque and a flag that has flown over the Texas State Capital. An emotional Duane said, “Dalhart has been good to me, and I thank you.”

    Mr. Brewer joined Dalhart Federal Savings and Loan Association in May of 1975, where he continued to be employed until August of 1982. At that time he went to First National Bank of Dalhart, where he was employed until September, 1983. He then returned to Dalhart Federal Savings and Loan Association where he served as Senior Vice President, Interim Managing Officer, President and CEO. Mr. and Mrs. Brewer are members of the First Baptist Church.

    Although Duane will still be around, his daily presence will be greatly missed by the officers and staff of the Association. DFS&L has a remarkable employee retention rate which may be attributed to the leadership of Mr. Brewer. He is admired and respected by many because he has earned it. Executive Vice President Bill Cunningham stated, “Duane Brewer has poured his heart and soul into DFS&L for 34 years. He has been the outstanding leader of a great board and staff that has brought us to be the success that we are today. I owe a lot to Duane; he is the reason I am here.”

    Mr. Duane Brewer, we are a truly blessed community to have a man such as yourself to look up to. Good luck in all your future endeavors.
